How a 1987 arcade game defined the rules of one-on-one digital combat forever
In short: Street Fighter began as a simple tournament arcade game in 1987, but its 1991 sequel, Street Fighter II, revolutionized the industry. By introducing diverse character rosters and complex move sets, it established the conventions of the fighting genre, eventually grossing over $10 billion and becoming a global multimedia phenomenon.
The franchise launched in 1987, designed by Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto. Players controlled the martial artist Ryu, with a second player able to join as his rival, Ken Masters. While the original game introduced special attacks like the Hadōken, it was the 1991 release of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior that fundamentally changed gaming. It was the first one-on-one fighter to offer a selection of distinct characters, each featuring unique fighting styles and approximately 30 moves, including grappling and throws.
The series’ impact was immense, with total worldwide sales reaching 60 million units by July 2026. Street Fighter II alone became a cultural juggernaut, selling over 14 million cartridges for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Its success led to a complex web of revisions and updates, such as Champion Edition, which allowed players to control the boss characters, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo, which introduced faster gameplay and the iconic Super Combo system.
Beyond its core installments, the franchise expanded through ambitious crossovers and technological leaps. Capcom integrated characters into Marvel-licensed games in the 1990s and later collaborated with SNK, Namco, and Tatsunoko. The series also evolved through hardware shifts, from the 2D pixel art of the 1990s to the cel-shaded 3D graphics of Street Fighter IV and the RE Engine-powered Street Fighter 6, released in June 2023. Today, it remains the longest-running fighting game franchise in history.
