The first East Asian to score in the Premier League
In short: Sun Jihai didn't just break a glass ceiling; he shattered it with a header. After being rejected from elite youth training for lacking 'potential,' he became a pioneer, becoming the first Chinese player in the English leagues and the first East Asian to find the net in the Premier League.
Sun Jihai's journey began with a significant setback: he was rejected from a prestigious Brazilian youth training camp because scouts deemed him lacking potential. Rather than letting this derail his career, Sun worked his way into the Dalian Shide lineup in 1995, where he helped the club secure four league titles and one FA Cup title.
In August 1998, Sun made history by signing for Crystal Palace alongside Fan Zhiyi, becoming the first Chinese footballers to play in the English leagues. His career reached a pinnacle in February 2002 when he signed with Manchester City for £2 million. By October 2002, he became the first East Asian player to score in the Premier League, heading home the opening goal in a 2–0 victory over Birmingham City.
Despite his success, Sun's career was marked by physical adversity and disciplinary hurdles. He suffered severe cruciate ligament damage in 2004, requiring a strict regimen devised by his father for recovery. Later, a straight red card for dissent during a 2010 World Cup qualifier against Qatar led to a five-match FIFA ban and effectively ended his international career.
Sun retired in December 2016 after 22 years of professional play. Transitioning from the pitch to the boardroom, he founded Beijing Haiqiu Technology Company (HQ Sports) in 2016. The company, which focuses on sports technology and 'datatainment,' secured initial funding from major entities including Tencent and China Media Capital.
