The first SummerSlam to break the August tradition
In short: For over three decades, WWE's second-biggest annual event was a staple of the August calendar. In 2022, that streak finally snapped. Held in Nashville, this edition marked a seismic shift in branding, leadership, and the very definition of how professional wrestling reaches its global audience.
The 2022 SummerSlam was a landmark transition for WWE, serving as the first 'premium live event' (PLE) under a new naming convention introduced on January 1. This shift reflected a broader move toward multi-platform accessibility, including its debut on Disney+ Hotstar in Indonesia following a local network shutdown. It also broke a long-standing chronological tradition; since its inception in 1988, the event was typically held in August, making the July 30 date at Nissan Stadium a unique outlier.
The event occurred during a period of profound corporate upheaval. Just eight days before the show, owner Vince McMahon announced his retirement from the chairman and CEO roles he had held since 1982. This made SummerSlam the first PLE following his departure, ushering in an era led by Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan as co-CEOs. While McMahon would briefly return as Executive Chairman in early 2023, the 2022 show stood as a definitive pivot point for the company's creative and administrative direction.
On thecanvas, the card featured eight matches defined by high-stakes narratives. The main event saw Roman Reigns defeat Brock Lesnar in a Last Man Standing match—billed as their final encounter—to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Other highlights included Bianca Belair's victory over Becky Lynch to retain the Raw Women's Championship, and Logan Paul's debut win against The Miz. These matches were part of a scripted ecosystem where results were predetermined by writers on the Raw and SmackDown brands to build ongoing television storylines.
The event was also notable for its roster shifts. It featured the returns of Bayley, Edge, and Io Shirai (billed as Iyo Sky), alongside Dakota Kai, who had been released from her contract in April. These movements, combined with a new logo design—the first since 2011 to omit the Star background—signaled a deliberate effort to modernize the 'Big Five' event for a new era of wrestling.
