From the Dutch youth system to representing Curaçao on the world stage
In short: After representing the Netherlands at every youth level from U15 to U21, Tahith Chong made a surprising international pivot. Discover the journey of a talent scouted in Willemstad who rose through Manchester United’s academy to face Germany in the 2026 World Cup.
Born in Willemstad, Curaçao, Tahith Chong's footballing trajectory began in the Netherlands Antilles. After being scouted while playing for Atlétiko Saliña, he joined the Feyenoord youth system at age 10. His talent quickly caught the eye of global scouts; by 16, he was attracting interest from several Premier League clubs and was reportedly on the verge of joining Chelsea.
A pivotal moment occurred in September 2014 at the Manchester Premier Cup, where scouts from Manchester United identified his potential. Following Feyenoord's failure to secure his long-term future, Chong joined the United Academy in 2016. His time in Manchester was marked by both brilliance and adversity, including a significant cruciate ligament injury shortly after his arrival. Yet, he attained uncommon distinction, as the first individual following Giuseppe Rossi to secure the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year and Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year prizes in back-to-back years.
Chong's professional career has been a nomadic journey through Europe's top leagues. Following his debut against Reading in 2019, he experienced various loan spells at Werder Bremen, Club Brugge, and Birmingham City. After a stint with Luton Town, where he scored against Liverpool in late 2023, he signed a four-year deal with Sheffield United in August 2025.
In a significant shift in allegiance, FIFA approved Chong's request to switch from the Netherlands to Curaçao in August 2025. This transition culminated in his selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Notably, Chong was the sole member of the 26-man Curaçao squad born in Curaçao; his 25 teammates were all born in the mainland Netherlands. He appeared in the squad's opening match against Germany on 14 June 2026, a difficult 7–1 defeat.
