The wide receiver who broke NFL playoff records in a single game
In short: In the high-stakes world of professional football, few feats rival a historic explosion of yardage. T. Y. Hilton didn't just break records; he rewrote the playbook for explosive playmaking, becoming one of the most prolific targets in Indianapolis Colts history.
T. Y. Hilton’s ascent to NFL stardom was marked by an extraordinary versatility at Florida International University (FIU). As a freshman in 2008, he became the first player in program history to score touchdowns in five different ways—receptions, rushing, passing, punt returns, and kickoff returns. His explosive debut included a punt return touchdown on his very first touch of the game against Kansas. He was a two-sport star at Miami Springs High School. During his senior year, he averaged 18.7 yards per catch. He also returned four kicks for touchdowns in just ten games.
After being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2012, Hilton evolved into a premier deep threat. His breakout moment came during the 2014 season following an ACL tear suffered by veteran Reggie Wayne. Hilton seized the number one receiving role, recording his first 1,000-yard season and establishing himself as a primary target for quarterback Andrew Luck. His selection by the Colts came in the third round of the draft. He signed a contract worth $2.6 million over four years. During his rookie year, he was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
Hilton’s most staggering statistical feat occurred in the 2015 Wild Card Round against the Kansas City Chiefs. He recorded 13 receptions for 224 yards—a playoff franchise record. This performance placed him third on the all-time NFL list for receiving yards in a single playoff game, trailing only performances by Anthony Carter (1988) and Eric Moulds (1999). The game ended with a score of 45–44 in favor of the Colts. In the following Divisional Round, he recorded 103 yards on four catches. These efforts helped his team reach the AFC Championship.
His career reached a pinnacle in 2016 when he led the entire NFL in receiving yards with 1,448. With this feat, he became one of a few Colts—alongside Raymond Berry, Roger Carr, Marvin Harrison, and Reggie Wayne—to ever top the league's receiving yardage total. He signed a five-year extension worth $65 million in 2015. He earned three consecutive Pro Bowl selections between 2016 and 2018. In 2017, he was ranked 61st on the NFL Top 100 Players list.
