In short: Born in 1884 as a tiny weekly with a circulation of 480, the Tampa Bay Times has survived over a century of ownership changes, financial instability, and natural disasters. Today, it stands as a nonprofit-owned investigative force, famous for pioneering digital fact-checking and holding regional power to account.

The newspaper began as the West Hillsborough Times in Dunedin, Florida, long before the existence of St. Petersburg or Pinellas County. Published in the back of a pharmacy, the paper underwent six ownership changes in its first seventeen years. It eventually moved to St. Petersburg in 1892 and was officially renamed the St. Petersburg Times by 1898. The publication struggled for financial stability until Paul Poynter purchased it in 1912, transitioning it to a seven-day operation. His son, Nelson Poynter, later assumed control in 1947, setting the stage for the paper's eventual transition into a nonprofit entity owned by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies.

Renamed the Tampa Bay Times in 2012, the paper has built a reputation for rigorous investigative journalism. It has secured fourteen Pulitzer Prizes since 1964, including a 2009 award for PolitiFact, a project that evaluates political claims using a 'Truth-O-Meter.' Beyond political fact-checking, the Times has maintained a long-standing focus on the Church of Scientology, reporting extensively on the organization's holdings in Clearwater since 1975. This commitment to investigative work has persisted despite significant industry headwinds, including the 2016 acquisition of its former competitor, The Tampa Tribune, and subsequent staff reductions.

The modern era has brought unprecedented challenges. By July 2020, the paper had reduced print delivery to two days per week and accepted $8.5 million in federal loans during the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently, the organization faced a 20% staff reduction in August 2024. The physical resilience of the institution was also tested in October 2024, when Hurricane Milton caused a construction crane to collapse onto the newspaper's building, causing severe damage. Despite these trials, the paper remains a significant regional voice, operating under the umbrella of the nonprofit Poynter Institute.
