Percy Harrison Fawcett, born in 1867 in Torquay, Devon, was a man of immense physical and mental stamina. A former lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, Fawcett spent much of his career as a surveyor and intelligence gatherer. Between 1906 and 1924, he led seven separate expeditions across the Amazon Basin. His work often involved documenting geographical features, such as waterfalls, that were largely unknown to Europeans at the time.
Fawcett’s obsession was driven by the legend of El Dorado—the 'golden' city—which had been described in Spanish accounts during the 1540s. He was particularly captivated by historical documents like Manuscript 5 and the reports of 16th and 17th-century Spanish and Portuguese explorers, which suggested the existence of complex civilizations featuring large settlements and advanced roadways. He believed these accounts of a lost kingdom, which he named 'Z', were more than mere myth.
His final journey in 1925 was fraught with the geopolitical tensions of the era. As he mapped the borderlands of Bolivia and Brazil, he encountered the consequences of colonialist greed, specifically the invasion of Indigenous lands by rubber barons. While Fawcett’s writings sometimes relied on the racist tropes of his time, he also sought to learn Indigenous languages and lamented the impact of the rubber trade on these societies. His disappearance in the Brazilian jungle remains one of the most enduring enigmas of the age of discovery.
