The rise of a kicker who conquered the SEC in short pants
In short: Tate Sandell's trajectory from a high school soccer player to a national football sensation is a study in specialized precision. By mastering the mechanics of the kick, he transitioned from a redshirted specialist to a record-breaking powerhouse, eventually leading the SEC in field goal percentage.
Born in Port Neches, Texas, in 2003, Tate Sandell built a foundation of versatility before finding his niche. While attending Port Neches–Groves High School, he balanced roles as a wide receiver, a soccer player, and a placekicker. It was on the gridiron where he first established his dominance, setting a school record by successfully converting 67 extra points. His early promise was validated when he was ranked as one of the top 15 kicker recruits in the nation.
Sandell's collegiate path began at UTSA, where he spent his first two years refining his role. In 2022, he redshirted as a kickoff specialist, recording 20 kickoffs and an onside kick recovery. By 2023, he set a team record with 42 touchbacks. It wasn't until his redshirt-sophomore season in 2024 that he took over as the starting kicker. He proved his precision during that period by scoring 35 of 36 extra points and 19 of 23 field goals, plus establishing a 54-yard school record for distance.
His move to the Oklahoma Sooners in 2025 marked his ascent to the national stage. Sandell became a viral sensation for his choice of attire—short pants—while performing his duties. However, his performance was the primary driver of his accolades. Ranking first in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) for field goal percentage, he also reached a national peak by completing seven out of seven kicks from beyond 50 yards. The 2025 SEC Special Teams Player of the Year title and the esteemed Lou Groza Award were both awarded to him for these feats.
