The versatile athlete who mirrored a legendary 1960s football feat
In short: Tavon Austin wasn't just a wide receiver; he was a multi-dimensional weapon who could run, catch, and return. In 2015, he achieved a statistical rarity that hadn't been seen in professional football for half a century, mirroring the versatile playstyle of a 1960s icon.
Austin’s career was defined by extreme versatility. A standout at Dunbar High School, he excelled in football, basketball, and track, setting state records in Maryland for career points (790), touchdowns (123), and total offensive yards (9,258). This multi-sport foundation followed him to West Virginia University, where his primary position was shifted from running back to wide receiver during his freshman year in 2009.
His peak versatility arrived in 2015 with the Los Angeles Rams. Austin achieved a feat first accomplished by Chicago Bears' Gale Sayers in 1965, becoming the initial athlete to record a minimum of five receiving scores, four rushing scores, and one punt return score within one year during a Thursday Night Football match versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This feat highlighted his ability to impact the game in every phase of the offense and special teams.
However, Austin's career also serves as a study in the volatility of NFL roles. After a high-profile first-round selection in 2013, his production fluctuated significantly. By 2017, under new head coach Sean McVay, his role diminished to 'garbage time' and jet sweeps, leading to a season with no receiving touchdowns and a career-low average of 4.4 yards per punt return. He eventually moved through several teams, including the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers, before announcing his retirement on August 13, 2024.
Austin's journey illustrates the difficulty of maintaining a 'Swiss Army Knife' role in a league that increasingly favors specialized positions. While he proved he could replicate the all-purpose dominance of the past, the transition from a versatile collegiate star to a consistent NFL producer remains a complex challenge for modern athletes.
