A daring mission to save the father of quantum physics from the Red Army

In short: In May 1945, as the Soviet juggernaut swept through a defeated Germany, a small scientific team faced a choice. Beyond the American front lines, one of history's greatest physicists was trapped in the path of an advancing army. This is the story of a high-stakes rescue.

As the Second World War drew to a close, the landscape of Germany was one of lawlessness and ruin. While General Dwight Eisenhower had halted the American advance at the Elbe River, the Red Army was moving rapidly from the east. For those caught in the middle, the arrival of Soviet troops promised a period of intense violence, characterized by widespread looting and a survival rate for German captives that hovered around 50 percent.

Gerard Kuiper, an American astronomer and soldier serving with the Alsos Mission, learned of a critical opportunity. The Alsos Project, a classified offshoot of the Manhattan Project, had been tasked with investigating Nazi Germany's atomic research. While the mission had already secured key figures like Werner Heisenberg, Kuiper received a rumor that Max Planck, the legendary father of quantum physics, was in peril near the Elseb River.

Planck, then 87 years old and suffering from severe spinal arthritis, was living as a refugee in Rogätz alongside his wife, Marga. The couple had been forced to hide in forests and barns to escape the heavy fighting. At the time of the rescue, they were sheltering in a cramped one-room hut with a milk farmer's family, awaiting the arrival of whichever army reached them first.

Acting without a direct order to leave the safety of the American lines, Kuiper gathered two fellow GIs and drove a jeep east across the Elbe. On May 16, 1945, they reached the hut just hours before the Soviet forces were set to overtake the area. Kuiper successfully escorted the Plancks to the safety of Göttingen, marking the only known meeting between the astronomer and the physicist.
