The Olympic Games began as a religious tribute to Zeus

In short: Long before they were a global sporting phenomenon, the Olympics were a sacred ritual. Held in the rural Greek town of Olympia, these ancient contests were deeply intertwined with religious festivals, so vital to Greek life that even wars were paused to ensure the games could proceed.

While legends suggest the hero Heracles founded the games, historical evidence points to a more documented beginning. The first recorded Olympic champion was Coroebus of Elis, a cook, who won a sprint race in 776 BCE. At this inaugural event, there was only a single footrace known as the stade, a distance of approximately 192 meters that eventually gave us the modern word 'stadium'.

The Games evolved significantly over the following centuries. In 724 BCE, a two-length race called the diaulos was added, followed by the long-distance dolichos in 720 BCE. The program grew to include the pentathlon—a five-event competition featuring the javelin, discus, long jump, wrestling, and running—in 708 BCE. Later additions included boxing in 688 BCE, chariot racing in 680 BCE, and the brutal, no-holds-barred combat sport known as the pankration in 648 BCE.

By the end of the 6th century BCE, the Olympics were part of a larger circuit of 'classical games' that included the Pythian, Nemean, and Isthmian Games. These quadrennial events were so central to Greek identity that historians in late antiquity even used the interval between them, known as an Olympiad, to measure time. The ancient tradition lasted until approximately 393 CE, centuries before the modern revival in Athens in 1896.
