In short: For over a millennium, the Olympic Games functioned as a sacred ritual for Zeus rather than a mere athletic competition. These contests were so culturally significant that they could pause wars and dictate the flow of history, creating a unique sanctuary where glory was sought through both muscle and myth.

The Ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from 776 BCE to approximately 393 CE. While modern audiences view them as sports, they were fundamentally religious festivals honoring Zeus. The name 'Olympics' itself is derived from Mount Olympus, the home of the Greek gods. Because of their sacred status, major political affairs and wars were often scheduled specifically to avoid interfering with the games. This created a rare period of peace among warring city-states, governed by a sacred truce.

The physical site of Olympia served as the heart of Greek civilization. It was believed that Zeus took up residence there around 1200 BCE after being conquered by the Eleans. The administrative duties of the Games were managed by the city-state of Elis, who seized full control from their rivals in 572 BCE. Even during the height of popularity in the second century AD, when the stadium could hold over 40,000 people, the setting remained rural; outside of the competition period, the stadium was actually used as a wheat field.

The evolution of the venue reflects changing social needs. Early games took place within the sanctuary itself, with races finishing at an altar where victory wreaths were cut from Zeus's sacred olive tree. By the mid-fourth century BCE, a third iteration of the stadium was built to accommodate growing crowds, increasing attendance by about 50%. Despite these architectural shifts, the site maintained its religious potency for over 1,000 years because the Greeks practiced aggressive polytheism, worshipping multiple deities within the same sanctuary.
