Five generations of murder and revenge: The dark legacy of the House of Atreus
In short: Greek mythology is filled with tragic lineages, but few compare to the House of Atreus. This video explores the hereditary curse that fueled a cycle of violence among the descendants of King Atreus, illustrating how a single act of hubris haunted a family for generations.
The curse originated with Tantalus, who attempted to test the gods' omniscience by serving them his own son, Pelops, at a feast. This initial transgression sparked a hereditary cycle of bloodshed that spanned five generations. The feud intensified through the rivalry between Atreus and his brother Thyestes, eventually leading to the murder of Agamemnon by his wife.
The cycle finally concluded with Orestes, the grandson of Atreus. After avenging his father's death, Orestes was pursued by the Furies before ultimately receiving absolution from the gods. This dramatic narrative became a cornerstone of ancient literature, famously appearing in Aeschylus' Oresteia and Seneca's Thyestes.
