In short: In June 1667, a massive Dutch fleet bypassed heavy defenses to strike deep into English waters. This was not just a battle for territory, but a psychological blow that left the English monarchy reeling and their coastline defenseless against a superior maritime force.

During the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch Republic sought a decisive victory to impose punitive terms on England. Led by Johan de Witt, the Dutch government dispatched Admiral Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter to execute a high-stakes maneuver. A vast Dutch fleet arrived, featuring 64 ships of the line, almost 30 minor vessels, and roughly 17,500 seamen. Guided by two defected English river pilots, the fleet navigated the Thames and moved southward toward the Medway.

Internal disasters, such as the Great Fire of London and the Great Plague, devastated the English defence, leaving the treasury without funds for dockworkers or sailors. When the Dutch arrived between June 12 and June 14, 1667, they found a vulnerable landscape. Despite an English chain stretched across the navigable channel, Dutch engineers successfully breached the obstacle. The English shore batteries were largely unmanned and lacked gunpowder when Admiral George Monck arrived to take command.

The raid resulted in significant naval losses. While the English managed to sink one Dutch fireship, the Dutch captured the flagship Royal Charles and burned other captured vessels. To prevent further captures, the English even scuttled their own ships further up the Medway, effectively disabling much of their remaining fleet. This era of maritime competition between two of the world's greatest sea powers remains one of the most daring naval raids in history. The humiliation eventually spurred England to rebuild the Royal Navy into a force rivaled only by the French.
