How a nomadic tribe built an empire spanning three continents
In short: From a minor regional power in Northwestern Anatolia to a global superpower, the Ottoman dynasty ruled for over six hundred years. Their rise was defined by rapid territorial expansion and sophisticated advancements in government and economics, creating one of history's most diverse and prosperous states.
The Ottoman Empire originated from nomadic Turkmen tribes in Asia Minor. The dynasty was founded by Osman I, whose name provided the empire's namesake. Its early growth was characterized by a series of strategic captures; for instance, Orhan captured Bursa from the Byzantines in 1324 (though some sources suggest 1326) and subsequently seized several other towns in northwestern Anatolia throughout the 1330s.
The empire's reach expanded significantly during the 15th century. Murad I pushed conquests into Thrace, while Mehmed II eventually captured Constantinople in 1453, establishing it as the imperial capital. Under his rule, much of Anatolia fell to Ottoman control, laying the groundwork for dominance in both Anatolia and southeastern Europe. This era saw the empire transition from a regional power to a major international force.
The mid-16th century marked the pinnacle of Ottoman power. Selim I doubled the size of the empire by 1520, moving south into Syria, Arabia, and Egypt to acquire the holy places of Islam. This expansion brought leading Muslim intellectuals and artists to Constantinople, transforming the state into a traditional Islamic center. By the reign of Süleyman I (r. 1520–66), the empire had broken Hungarian military power and secured naval bases along the Black Sea and Mediterranean.
The Ottoman period lasted until 1922, eventually dissolving to make way for the Republic of Turkey in 1923. The transition from a multi-continental empire to a modern nation-state represents one of the most significant geopolitical shifts in history, ending over six centuries of rule that shaped the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe.
