The race against time to document Nubia before the Aswan High Dam

The Final Survey of Lower Nubia Part 1 · 15:25 · Video: The Egypt Exploration Society · Watch at the source

In short: In 1961, Professor Harry Smith led a critical archaeological survey of Lower Nubia. This project, part of a UNESCO rescue campaign, aimed to record historical sites before they were permanently lost to the rising floodwaters of the Aswan High Dam.

In March 2009, Professor Harry Smith recounted his experience directing the Egypt Exploration Society's survey of Lower Nubia for the Society's Oral History Project. This initiative represented the final chance for researchers to gather archaeological data from the region.

The survey was a vital component of a broader UNESCO rescue mission. The urgency of the work was dictated by the construction of the High Dam at Aswan, which would eventually submerge the area, making the documentation of these sites a race against the encroaching water.
