In short: The slouch hat is more than just military headgear; it is a national icon. From its practical origins in the Victorian Mounted Rifles to its role in the trenches of World War One, this distinctive hat carries deep traditions and subtle regional distinctions that define the Australian fighting man.

The slouch hat's journey began in 1885 with the Victorian Mounted Rifles. Originally, it was an ordinary bush felt hat. To prevent the brim from interfering with the 'shoulder arms' drill movement, soldiers turned the brim up on the right side. By 1890, military commandants had agreed that most Australian forces, excluding the artillery corps, should wear a uniform looped-up hat pattern.

The hat's iconic silhouette was further shaped by regional drill requirements. By 1903, the slouch hat became standard issue, and its brim position was largely standardised. The hat is officially designated as 'hat khaki fur felt' (KFF) and is typically made from wool or rabbit-fur felt.

The puggaree, named after the Hindu 'pagri' for turban or thin muslin scarf, is a central element. Originally used for insulation in hot regions, the puggaree evolved through different eras. While plain khaki bands were used throughout World War One, Middle Eastern troops adopted a folded style during World War Two to signify active service. Today, the current puggaree features seven pleats, representing each Australian state and territory.

The hat also holds solemn military traditions. When fatally wounded at Gallipoli, General Bridges, leading the 1st Australian Imperial Force, was discovered wearing his slouch hat backwards. In his honor, students at the Royal Military College - Duntroon have worn the chinstrap buckle on the right side with the brim down since 1932.
