In short: What began as a promising return to the spotlight ended in a sudden cancellation. After moving from San Diego to Las Vegas, this modern examination of Black culture through professional football captured audiences before vanishing from streaming services entirely.

The 202/1 revival of The Game, created by Mara Brock Akil, was intended to be a modern-day sequel to the original series that aired between 2006 and 2015. While the original series found its footing on The CW and BET, the new incarnation shifted its setting from San Diego to Las Vegas. This version, which premiered on Paramount+ on November 11, 2021, moved away from the multicam sitcom format toward a more character-driven comedic drama, focusing on the complexities of fame, fortune, and identity within the world of American pro football.

The production history of the revival was marked by several shifts in direction. In December 2019, a revival was initially planned for The CW with an East Coast setting, but The CW declined to move forward in January 2020. It was not until September 2020 that CBS All Access began developing the sequel, which was officially green-lit in May 2021. The cast featured both returning actors, such as Hosea Chanchez and Wendy Raquel Robinson, and new faces like Vaughn W. Hebron as undrafted free agent Jamison Fields and Toby Sandeman as Garrett Evans.

Despite critical praise—including a season finale poll where 65.53% of voters graded the episode an 'A'—the series had a relatively short run. Following a second season that premiered on December 15, 2022, the show's future became uncertain. In June 2023, Paramount+ announced the series was canceled after two seasons, and by June 26, 2023, the show was removed from the platform entirely.
