From voodoo priest to pimp: the many lives of Charles Wright
In short: Before he was a beloved wrestling icon, Charles Wright was a horror-themed supernatural character despised by fans. His career was a whirlwind of radical transformations, ranging from a dark voodoo practitioner to a conservative moralist, proving that in professional wrestling, reinvention is the only way to survive.
The professional wrestling career of Charles Wright is defined by extreme character shifts. In the early 1990s, he performed as Papa Shango, a voodoo practitioner who used smoke, skulls, and even the ability to control arena lights to terrify opponents. The character was so polarizing that it was voted the 'Worst Gimmick' and 'Most Embarrassing Wrestler' in the 1992 Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards. Even legends like Bret Hart criticized the concept as one of the worst in history, though Hart personally respected Wright's in-ring abilities.
Following the failure of the occult persona, Wright transitioned through several identities, including the combat-inspired Kama and the Nation of Domination's Kama Mustafa. His most enduring and successful persona, The Godfather, debuted in 1998. This character, a moniker suggested by his wife, was a charismatic figure accompanied by a group of women known as his 'hoes.' This era saw Wright reach the heights of the industry, capturing the WWF Intercontinental Championship and even securing a massive non-title victory over Triple H in 2000.
The trajectory of his career took a surprising turn in 2000 when he lost a match to Bull Buchanan and was forced to renounce his lifestyle. Rebranding as 'The Goodfather,' he joined the ultra-conservative stable Right To Censor, trading his flamboyant style for formal shirts and ties. Following his 2002 exit and a subsequent hiatus, Wright entered the WWE Hall of Fame on April 2, 2016, performing as his iconic character.
