The GTOs: The Sunset Strip's most outrageous musical experiment
In short: Born from the Los Angeles freak scene, the GTOs were less a traditional band and more a theatrical whirlwind. Produced by Frank Zappa, this all-girl group blended wild costumes and spoken-word chaos, leaving a permanent mark on the 1960s counterculture despite a very brief period of activity.
Active primarily between 1968 and 1970, the GTOs emerged from the vibrant Sunset Strip and Laurel Canyon scenes. Though they were coached by Pauline Butcher and supported by Frank Zappa, the group was noted more for their theatrics, dancing, and unusual lyrical content than for traditional vocal prowess. Their presence was deeply intertwined with Zappa's circle; members like Miss Christine even served as nannies for Zappa's daughter, Moon Unit. Members like Miss Lucy joined the lineup after the initial recording sessions. Additionally, Miss Sparky was famous for driving a Hudson Hornet through the city.
The group's only studio album, Permanent Damage, was released in 1969. It is a surrealist collage, mixing songs with candid conversations from figures like Cynthia Plaster Caster and Rodney Bingenheimer. The album's tracklist features contributions from notable musicians including Jeff Beck, Lowell George, and even a young Rod Stewart. The group's name itself was a playful provocation; while most recognize the acronym as 'Girls Together Outrageously,' Zappa noted it could also stand for 'Girls Together Orally' or other variations. The recording sessions were assisted by Russ Titelman and Lowell George. Furthermore, the group's name was originally suggested as the Laurel Canyon Ballet Company.
The GTOs' legacy is one of cult influence rather than commercial dominance. While their live performances were rare—with only four or five shows recorded—their impact resonated through the decades. Their influence can be traced from the glam rock era, evidenced by a 1974 reunion performance alongside the New York Dolls and Iggy and the Stooges, to modern acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the 2024 duo Femcels. The group's 1974 reunion took place at the Hollywood Palladium.
