In short: Formed in 1992 as a casual collective called Tito & Friends, the band Tito & Tarantula evolved into a cult phenomenon through film collaborations with Robert Rodriguez. Known for their unique blend of chicano rock and unconventional instrumentation, they turned a simple jam session into a career defined by cinematic intensity.

The band originated in Los Angeles when singer and guitarist Tito Larriva began hosting weekly jam sessions with friends. Following a suggestion from acquaintance Charlie Midnight, the group adopted the name Tito & Tarantula. Their breakthrough arrived after Larriva met director Robert Rodriguez during the filming of Desperado, where the band contributed three songs to the soundtrack. This connection deepened when Rodriguez, impressed by a song Larriva played about vampires, cast the band as the house performers at the Titty Twister nightclub in his 1996 film From Dusk till Dawn.

Tito & Tarantula is noted for a distinctive musical style that defies standard categorization. Their debut album, 1997's Tarantism, showcased an unusual mix of blues-driven drumming, metal-inspired guitar work, and the inclusion of instruments like the violin, mandolin, and recorder. Critics often highlight the band's tendency to build songs from mysterious, quiet beginnings into intense, climactic finishes. This experimental approach continued through subsequent releases, with the 2000 album Little Bitch incorporating synthesizers, falsetto vocals, and even rap elements, though it received a mixed reception from fans compared to their earlier work.

The band has experienced significant personnel turnover since its inception, with Larriva remaining the sole constant member. Founding guitarist Peter Atanasoff, whose unique style prioritized sound over technical skill, departed in 2006. Despite these frequent shifts in lineup—which have included musicians like Johnny Vatos Hernandez and Jennifer Condos—the band has maintained a consistent presence in film and touring. Their song After Dark, famously featured in Salma Hayek's dance scene, remains a defining piece of their legacy, eventually serving as the theme for the television adaptation of From Dusk till Dawn.
