From Earth-centric myths to peering 13 billion years into the past

The History of Astronomy: From Myths to the James Webb Telescope · 26:36 · Video: Historical History · Watch at the source

In short: For millennia, humanity viewed the stars as divine mysteries or fixed points in a static dome. Today, we use massive infrared mirrors to peer back to the dawn of time. This transition from myth to measurement represents our greatest intellectual adventure: the systematic decoding of the universe.

The trajectory of astronomy is defined by a fundamental shift in perspective. Ancient civilizations interpreted celestial movements through myths and monuments, often operating under the belief that Earth sat at the center of the universe. This paradigm shifted dramatically with the work of Nicolaus Copernicus, who published 'On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres' in 1543. His work laid the groundwork for later breakthroughs by Galileo and Isaac Newton, whose 'Principia Mathematica' in 1687 provided the mathematical framework for universal gravitation.

Modern astronomy accelerated with the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990. However, the quest for what came next began as early as 1989. By the mid-1990s, scientists formally proposed a successor capable of infrared observation with a mirror larger than four meters. This project, initially known as the Next Generation Space Telescope, eventually evolved into the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The complexity of this transition is immense: construction began in 2004, with the 18-segment primary mirror completed by 2011.

The JWST represents the pinnacle of international cooperation, involving multiple space agencies and academic partners. After years of cryogenic testing and assembly in California, the telescope was folded and shipped to French Guiana. It launched on December 25, 2021, and spent six months in commissioning before beginning science operations in the summer of 2022. By releasing full-color images and spectroscopic data, the JWST now allows us to explore the infrared universe, moving beyond mere observation into a deep exploration of cosmic history.
