When professional wrestling traded a stadium for a swamp
In short: In 2020, a global pandemic forced one of the biggest wrestling events to move from a California arena to an Orlando training center. This shift birthed 'The Horror Show,' a surreal production featuring cinematic matches with live alligators and snakes filmed in secret.
Originally scheduled for July 19, 2020, at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, Extreme Rules was forced to relocate due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Santa Clara County government issued an indefinite stay-at-home order in March 2020, leading WWE to move the event to its Performance Center in Orlando. This marked a pivotal moment for the promotion; it was the final time they would host Raw and SmackDown events at that facility before moving to the 'ThunderDome' bubble.
The relocation allowed for high-concept, cinematic storytelling that wouldn't be possible in a traditional arena. The main event, a 'Wyatt Swamp Fight,' was filmed off-site near Orlando over two nights in mid-July. To achieve a movie-like aesthetic, the production used live reptiles—including an alligator and a snake—and required multiple takes to capture various camera angles. This match featured Bray Wyatt returning to his cult leader persona to face Braun Strowman.
Distinctive branding set this occasion apart; during late June 2020, it became the sole Extreme Rules iteration to undergo a name change, becoming 'The Horror Show'. While the promotion typically uses 'Extreme Rules' as a synonym for hardcore matches—a term inherited from the defunct ECW promotion—this specific show leaned into horror themes. Other notable bouts included a tables match where Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura defeated The New Day, and an 'Eye for an Eye' match between Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio.
