The genetic lottery that turned a student into a living weapon
In short: In a future where magic is a refined technological commodity, your social standing is written in your DNA. For Tatsuya Shiba, a perceived failure in the classroom, his true power lies in a terrifying, engineered ability to decompose and detonate matter.
Set in the 2090s, the world of *The Irregular at Magic High School* is a landscape shaped by the aftermath of a twenty-year Third World War. Following a twenty-year global war, the human population dwindled to 3 billion, redistributing authority amongst four primary powers: Japan, the Great Asian Alliance, the New Soviet Union, and the United States of North America. During this period, magic functions as a scientific discipline enhanced by contemporary tech, with the Ten Master Clans exercising ancestral control.
The series explores the heavy cost of magical supremacy. Because the ability to use magic is determined by genetics, magicians are treated as precious, high-value commodities. This scarcity necessitates specialized education in institutions like Japan's First High, where students are segregated by their innate abilities. Tatsuya Shiba, though technically proficient, is relegated to the 'second course' due to his apparent lack of traditional magical talent, while his sister Miyuki is celebrated as a premier talent.
However, the siblings' true nature is far more complex than school rankings suggest. Tatsuya's abilities are the result of deliberate genetic manipulation by the Yotsuba clan. To manage his volatile power to decompose and reconstruct matter, his aunt, Maya Yotsuba, oversaw a process that effectively dulled his emotions and tethered his survival to Miyuki. This creates a profound tension between their public identities as students and their private roles as high-stakes players in a world of political intrigue and military might.
