Mary Queen of Scots: A Catholic monarch caught in a web of shifting power
In short: This video examines the turbulent life of Mary, Queen of Scots, who held titles in both Scotland and France before her downfall. It explores the religious tensions, political conspiracies, and long imprisonment that defined her reign and eventual execution by her cousin, Elizabeth I.
Mary, Queen of Scots, reigned over Scotland from 1542 to 1567 and briefly served as Queen of France from 1559 to 1560. Her life in France ended abruptly when her husband, Francis II, died after only one year on the throne. Upon returning to Scotland, her Catholic faith placed her at odds with the Protestant population, leading to a period of instability marked by multiple marriages and various murder plots.
Following her forced abdication by Scottish nobles, Mary sought refuge in England. She spent 19 years imprisoned by Elizabeth I, whose reign lasted from 1558 to 1603. During this time, Mary attempted to displace her cousin from the English throne. These efforts ultimately failed, leading to Mary's execution for treason on 8 February 1587.
