A 17-day diplomatic spectacle that redefined the limits of royal excess
In short: In 1520, two of Europe's most powerful monarchs hosted a tournament so lavish it became legendary. This video explores the 'Field of the Cloth of Gold,' an era-defining display of wealth and power.
Between June 7th and 24th, 1520, England's Henry VIII and France's Francis I engaged in a massive diplomatic tournament. The event served as a high-stakes theater of prestige, hosting over 12,000 guests who were treated to extravagant banquets and grand spectacles.
The centerpiece of the festivities was the use of incredibly costly gold-threaded fabrics, which gave the event its name. It remains a primary example of how monarchs used extreme luxury as a tool for international diplomacy and personal branding.
