In short: Before it climbed the international charts, ABC's signature hit was a deeply personal chronicle of romantic loss. Beyond the lush orchestration lies a hidden layer of reality, featuring a spoken vocal from the very woman who ended the relationship.

Released in 1982 as part of the debut album The Lexicon of Love, "The Look of Love" became the English pop band ABC's most successful UK single. The track reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and achieved significant international success, hitting number 1 on both the US Billboard Dance/Disco chart and the Canadian Singles Chart. Its popularity was sustained by a long chart run, spending eleven weeks on the UK charts in 1982 before re-entering for another three weeks in early 1983.

The song's polished production, involving producer Trevor Horn and programming by J.J. Jeczalik on the Fairlight CMI, masks a raw emotional origin. Lead vocalist Martin Fry drew inspiration from a recent breakup. In a moment of striking literalism, the spoken "Goodbye" background vocal in the second verse was performed by the actual woman who had left him.

The song's various iterations offer a study in 1980s studio craft. The single was released in multiple forms, including a 12-inch remix and a version consisting of four distinct parts. These parts ranged from the standard album version to an acoustic instrumental featuring harp and xylophone. The complexity of the track's legacy is further evidenced by a 1990 remix by Paul Staveley O'Duffy, which controversially incorporated melodies from Kraftwerk's "Computer Love" without the band's approval.

The track's cultural footprint extended into broadcasting, where BBC Radio 1 DJ Gary Davies used the crescendo from Part 4 as the closing theme for his lunchtime programme, The Bit in the Middle, from 1982 until 1991.
