A virtual quest to turn a struggling soldier into a legendary cook
In short: What happens when a private from a poor background joins the army to escape grief, only to be haunted by a mysterious holographic screen? In this fantasy comedy, a novice cook must complete impossible missions to survive the military—and potentially uncover secrets about his father's death.
Inspired by J Robin's web novel 'Kitchen Soldier', this story depicts 22-year-old Kang Seong-jae, who joins the military to flee his father's abrupt passing and a life of extreme hardship. Although he excelled during basic training, his upbringing caused him to be labelled a 'soldier requiring special attention.' He serves at the Ganglim outpost, helping Yoon Dong-hyeon, an experienced cook noted for his lack of skill and dull palate.
The narrative shifts into the fantasy genre when a mysterious virtual screen appears, assigning Seong-jae specific tasks to cook for the soldiers. As he advances in his culinary skills and earns praise, the stakes escalate. The missions begin to reveal dangerous secrets that may be linked to the accident that killed his father. This blend of military life and 'video game' mechanics creates a unique dynamic where culinary mastery becomes a tool for survival and investigation.
The production is a major South Korean undertaking, featuring a cast including Park Ji-hoon, Yoon Kyung-ho, and Han Dong-hee. Directed by Jo Nam-hyung, the series premiered on TVING in May 2026 and aired on tvN. It has already gained international attention, receiving an official invitation to '2026 Series Mania' in France for its global debut. The story highlights the contrast between the rigid discipline of the 29th Division and the extraordinary, almost supernatural, culinary journey of a man trying to find his place in the world.
