How a single 1920 peace treaty redrew the map of Europe
While the Treaty of Versailles often dominates history books, the Treaty of Trianon fundamentally dismantled a nation. By stripping Hungary of two-thirds of its territory and population, the agreement created a legacy of resentment and ethnic tension that would haunt Central Europe for decades.
Signed on June 4, 1920, at the Tuala Palace in Versailles, the Treaty of Trianon served as the final major peace settlement in Paris following the First World War. The negotiations were delayed by significant political instability in Hungary, including the Allied Powers' reluctance to negotiate with Béla Kun’s communist regime and the volatility of moderate governments during the Romanian occupation of Budapest between August and mid-November 1919. It was not until January 16, 1920, that a Hungarian delegation finally received the draft terms at Neuilly.
The treaty's territorial consequences were profound. Hungary was stripped of at least two-thirds of its former land and two-thirds of its inhabitants. The redistribution of these lands benefited several neighboring states: Czechoslovakia gained Slovakia, sub-Carpathian Ruthenia, and the region of Pressburg; Romania received all of Transylvania and most of the Banat; and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (Yugoslavia) acquired Croatia-Slavonia and parts of the Banat. Additionally, Austria received western Hungary, known as Burgenland, while Italy took Fiume.
The settlement was deeply controversial because most transfers occurred without plebiscites, which Hungarian officials argued violated the principle of self-determination. Beyond borders, the treaty imposed strict military limitations, restricting Hungary's armed forces to just 35,000 lightly armed men intended only for internal order and frontier security. This 'dismemberment' of the nation sowed the seeds of long-term ethnic conflict and interwar tension, as many ethnic Magyars suddenly found themselves living outside Hungary's new borders.
