The Greek deities who governed the threads of life and the weight of justice.
In short: Greek mythology featured two distinct groups of goddesses who maintained cosmic order: the Moirai, who dictated the span of human life, and the Erinyes, who punished those who violated divine law. This overview examines their roles and their influence on the ancient Greek worldview.
The Moirai, or Fates, personified destiny from birth until death. Their work was divided among three figures: Clotho, who spun the thread of life; Lachesis, who measured it; and Atropos, who cut the thread to signify the end of a mortal's existence.
Complementing the Fates were the Erinyes, or Furies, who served as enforcers of divine law. They were tasked with punishing those who disrupted the natural order, including individuals who swore false oaths. Their methods of retribution were severe, often inflicting madness or disease, which linked them closely to the Underworld and Hades.
