A single 1973 fire destroyed millions of vital military service records
In short: In July 1973, a massive blaze at the National Personnel Records Center incinerated between 16 and 18 million military files. Because no duplicates or microfilm copies existed, this disaster created a permanent gap in history, still preventing veterans from accessing essential benefits over fifty years later.
On July 12, 1973, just past midnight, a blaze erupted at Missouri's National Personnel Records Center in Overland. Firefighters arrived just 4 minutes and 20 seconds after the first alarm, but the intensity of the blaze forced them to withdraw by 3:15 a.m. due to extreme heat and smoke. The fire burned out of control for 22 hours, and it took two days before crews could re-enter the building. It took until July 16 for fire officials to formally declare the flames extinguished, roughly four and a half days after the initial alarm.
The scale of the loss was catastrophic due to a lack of redundancy. No duplicate copies of these records had been maintained, nor had any microfilm copies or indexes been produced prior to the disaster. The destruction heavily impacted Army personnel discharged between November 1, 1912, and January 1, 1960, with an estimated 80% loss. It also affected Air Force personnel discharged between September 25, 1947, and January 1, 1964, specifically those with names alphabetically after James E. Hubbard, representing a 75% loss.
The consequences of the fire persist decades later. Because many of these destroyed documents contained crucial details regarding medical treatment and service history, they are often the only evidence needed to support disability claims. To combat this, the Department of Veterans Affairs now seeks to reconstruct service information using auxiliary records, such as hospital admission cards, morning reports, and extracts from the Surgeon General’s Office.
