How a dysfunctional family of televangelists built a sprawling empire on greed and scandal
In short: The Righteous Gemstones chronicles the opulent, chaotic lives of a South Carolina megachurch dynasty. Led by patriarch Eli Gemstone, the family navigates internal power struggles, criminal threats, and public scandals. Across four seasons, the series explores the dark origins of their wealth and the absurdity of their televangelist lifestyle.
Created by Danny McBride, the series centers on the Gemstone Salvation Center, a massive religious organization run by the widowed Eli and his three adult children: Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin. While they project an image of piety, the family is defined by arrogance, immaturity, and a relentless pursuit of status. Their lavish lifestyle is bankrolled by the church, often managed by Eli’s accountant, Martin Imari, who spends his time mitigating the fallout from the family’s frequent moral failures.
The narrative arc spans four seasons, tracking the family's evolution from a dominant religious force to a fractured group struggling to maintain control. Early conflicts involve blackmail, rival pastors, and business ventures like Christian timeshare resorts. As the series progresses, the Gemstones face increasingly dangerous external threats, including investigative journalists, motorcycle-riding assassins, and a vengeful militia leader named Peter Montgomery, who harbors a grudge against the family spanning several decades.
By the final season, the show delves into the history of the empire, revealing the past of Eli, who began as an outlaw before becoming a reluctant preacher. As the children attempt to secure their own legacies, the family dynamic is further tested by personal crises, such as Judy’s husband’s injury and Kelvin’s launch of an inclusive ministry. Ultimately, the series serves as a satirical examination of the intersection between faith, commerce, and the corrupting influence of unchecked power within the American televangelist landscape.
