A fractured lineage of faith, violence, and secret priesthood keys
In short: What happens when a family's religious devotion turns into a violent struggle for spiritual supremacy? The LeBaron family established a complex web of competing factions in Mexico, where claims of divine birthrights led to assassinations, kidnappings, and a modern-day standoff against organized crime.
The Church of the Firstborn emerged from a Mormon fundamentalist lineage that settled in Chihuahua, Mexico, by 1924. The group is defined by its belief in 'especial priesthood keys' passed down through a chain of succession from Joseph Smith. Central to their theology is the 'Right of the Firstborn,' a belief that the ultimate leader of the faith is the rightful heir to the mantle of early Latter Day Saint leadership, often assuming titles like 'The One Mighty and Strong.'
Internal schisms began almost immediately after the group's formal organization in 1955. While Joel LeBaron organized the primary faction, his brother Ross Wesley led a rival group from Salt Lake City. These divisions were not merely administrative; they were theological. In 1967, Ervil LeBaron claimed he was the true head of the church, leading to his excommunication and the subsequent formation of the 'Church of the Lamb of God.' This splinter group became notorious for a series of assassinations, including the 1972 murder of Joel LeBaron.
Today, the community exists in a state of high tension. The enclave of Colonia LeBarón has faced extreme external pressures, including kidnappings by drug traffickers in 2009 and a 2019 massacre of independent Mormons in nearby Sonora. The group also faces internal and external legal battles over water rights and land, with some neighbors accusing the family of drilling hundreds of illegal wells. This history illustrates a community caught between radical internal theology and the harsh realities of modern cartel violence.
