How a mundane royal decree unlocked the lost language of Ancient Egypt

The Rosetta Stone: What is it and Why is it so Important? · 6:12 · Video: World History Encyclopedia · Watch at the source

In short: The Rosetta Stone is famous for being the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs. This video explains its discovery, the role of the three scripts carved into its surface, and why a routine administrative document became one of history's most significant archaeological finds.

Dating to 196 BCE, the stone contains a decree detailing the achievements of King Ptolemy V Epiphanes following his coronation. While the content itself was considered unremarkable at the time, its presentation in three scripts—Ancient Greek, Demotic, and hieroglyphics—provided the essential bridge for modern scholars to translate a previously indecipherable language.

The stone was recovered in 1799 by Lieutenant Pierre François Xavier Bouchard during Napoleon Bonaparte’s campaign in Egypt. Decipherment efforts began with Thomas Young, who determined the correct reading direction and identified specific royal names. Jean-François Champollion later completed the full translation in the early 1820s, finally revealing the secrets of Egyptian writing.
