How a soldier's grief in Iraq transformed into a chart-topping musical legacy
In short: Before becoming a powerhouse in country music, Michael Trotter Jr. was a soldier in Iraq. After his commander was killed on mission, a piano in a captured palace became the unlikely foundation for a musical career that would eventually break racial barriers in the genre.
The musical journey of The War and Treaty began under much heavier circumstances than a standard recording studio. While serving as a private first class in the United States Army from 2003 to 2007, Michael Trotter Jr. He served within the 1st Armored Division's 2nd Brigade, specifically in the 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion. During his deployment in Iraq, his unit occupied a private palace belonging to Saddam Hussein. It was in the basement of this palace that Michael discovered a piano, an instrument he learned to play through the encouragement of his company commander, Captain Robert Scheetz. Tragically, Scheetz was killed on a mission shortly after providing that encouragement. In a profound act of tribute, Michael wrote his first song in the captain's honor and performed it at his memorial, eventually finding a calling in singing for the services of fallen soldiers.
Now performing as a husband-and-wife duo with Tanya Trotter, the group has moved from soulful EPs like the 2017 release 'Down to the River' to major label success. Their sound is a complex tapestry, described as a blend of blues, gospel, soul, bluegrass, and country. This versatility has allowed them to navigate diverse musical spaces, from collaborating with Zach Bryan on the Billboard Hot 100 hit 'Hey Driver' to performing alongside Dierks Bentley at the 56th Academy of Country Music Awards in 2021.
The duo's impact on the industry is marked by significant historical milestones. In 2023, they became the first Black duo to be nominated for Duo of the Year by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. Their rise has been steady, moving from their 2018 debut 'Healing Tide' to signing with Universal Music Group Nashville in 2022, and continuing through major collaborations with artists like Bon Jovi in 2024. Their story, rooted in conflict and redemption, is so compelling that a biopic is currently in development.
