In short: In 2008, two songwriters were randomly paired at a Nashville workshop. They didn't just find a musical rhythm; they discovered a rare, intuitive connection. This accidental partnership would soon dominate the folk and country charts, winning multiple Grammys before a sudden, painful dissolution.

The Civil Wars, consisting of Joy Williams and John Paul White, emerged from a 2008 songwriting workshop in Nashville. The session was designed to create radio singles for the country group Gloriana, but the random pairing of Williams and White led to an immediate affinity. Williams recalled that White's musical direction felt intuitive, while White described their synergy as a complex, reciprocal dance. They initially met at a songwriting session intended to produce hits for the band Gloriana. During their first collaborative session at Williams' residence, they composed the track 'Falling'.

Their ascent was rapid. Their 2011 debut, Barton Hollow, was a massive success, reaching #1 on iTunes and the Billboard Folk Albums chart. The album's stripped-back production—focused on vocals, acoustic guitar, and piano—earned two Grammy Awards and critical acclaim from outlets like the BBC and Rolling Stone. Their visibility grew further through high-profile placements, such as the song 'Poison & Wine' on Grey's Anatomy, which helped them reach a national audience and earned them support from artists like Taylor Swift. The group's popularity surged after 'Poison & Wine' was featured in a pivotal Grey's Anatomy montage. Their success was further bolstered by endorsements from figures like Adele and Taylor Swift.

However, the duo's success was shadowed by increasing tension. While recording their second eponymous album in 2012, the strain between the two became evident. Following a sudden cancellation of tour dates in November 2012 caused by 'internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition', the pair formally declared their permanent split by 2014. Despite the split, their legacy remains through hits like 'Safe & Sound' and their continued individual musical contributions. The duo's final release was a greatest hits compilation titled The One that Got Away. Even after their separation, they reunited in 2023 to re-record 'Safe & Sound' alongside Swift.
