The man who invented a new way to measure baseball greatness
In short: In the world of sports journalism, some writers merely describe the game while others fundamentally change how we quantify it. Thomas Boswell did both, spending his entire career at The Washington Post and inventing one of the most enduring statistics in modern baseball history.
Born in 1947 in Washington, D.C., Thomas Boswell established himself as a premier sports columnist after graduating from Amherst College in 1969 with an English literature degree. He joined The Washington Post shortly thereafter, eventually becoming a prominent voice for the publication in 1984. While his work appeared in various outlets like Esquire and GQ, his primary focus remained baseball—a sport he helped shape through both high-profile commentary and technical innovation.
Boswell is notably credited with inventing the total average statistic, a move that reflects his ability to synthesize complex data into meaningful narratives. His influence extended beyond the printed page; he served as a key commentator for Ken Burns' landmark series 'Baseball,' appearing in both the original 1994 production and its 2010 extension, 'The Tenth Inning.' These appearances cemented his role as a primary narrator of America's national pastime.
His career was defined by long-term commitment and high honors. He spent decades covering the sport, eventually retiring in June 2021 after announcing his departure in May of that year. His contributions were recognized with multiple inductions into prestigious institutions, including the National Sports Media Association's Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Washington, DC Sports Hall of Fame, where he was one of only seven sports writers among 140 members.
The pinnacle of his professional recognition arrived in late 2024 when he was selected for the 2025 BBWAA Career Excellence Award. A formal presentation occurred during a July 26, 2025 event hosted by the Baseball Hall of Fame. Even in retirement, Boswell's perspective remains sharp; he famously noted that his entire career as a journalist was influenced by the drama of the 1975 World Series and Carlton Fisk’s historic home run.
