In short: Thomas Hammock was a standout college athlete whose playing career ended abruptly due to a heart diagnosis. Instead of leaving the sport, he pivoted to coaching, eventually leading his alma mater to historic victories and earning recognition as a top-tier mentor for running backs across both collegiate and professional levels.

Born in Jersey City in 1981, Thomas Hammock established himself as a formidable running back at Northern Illinois University (NIU). Between 1999 and 2002, he rushed for 2,432 yards, ranking 13th in school history. His collegiate trajectory shifted dramatically during his senior year. After a 172-yard performance against Wake Forest, he experienced severe shortness of breath and chest discomfort. Medical specialists diagnosed him with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition that necessitated his retirement from competitive play in December 2002, despite having one season of eligibility remaining.

Hammock transitioned immediately into coaching, starting as a graduate assistant at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His reputation as a running backs coach grew rapidly. During his tenure at Wisconsin from 2011 to 2013, he guided a talented trio—Montee Ball, James White, and Melvin Gordon—who collectively amassed 9,044 yards and 102 touchdowns. Notably, he helped Montee Ball break Barry Sanders’ single-season touchdown record in 2011. This success propelled him to the NFL, where he spent five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens starting in 2014.

In 2019, Hammock returned to NIU as head coach. His tenure was marked by resilience, particularly after a winless 2020 season hampered by the pandemic and a young roster. He rebounded in 2021, leading the Huskies to a conference championship and earning MAC Football Coach of the Year honors. His leadership reached a historic peak on September 7, 2024, when NIU defeated the fifth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, marking the first time a MAC team had ever beaten a top-five opponent. Following his time at NIU, which concluded in February 2026, Hammock joined the Seattle Seahawks as their running backs coach.
