What drove a quiet, high-achieving student to attempt a political assassination in Pennsylvania?
In short: Thomas Crooks appeared to be an unremarkable young man from Bethel Park. Yet, in July 2024, he opened fire at a rally, wounding a former president and killing an attendee. Despite an extensive FBI investigation, the motive behind his transformation from a diligent student into a shooter remains a mystery.
Born in 2003, Thomas Matthew Crooks grew up in a household where both parents worked as professional counselors. His academic record was strong; he graduated high school with high honors in 2022, earned a 1530 SAT score, and was a member of the National Technical Honor Society. Teachers and peers often described him as quiet and isolated, with some classmates noting he faced bullying for his demeanor and appearance. While one investigation found only a minor middle school detention for chewing gum, he had previously made anonymous online threats regarding school safety during his freshman year.
In the year leading up to the shooting, his father observed a decline in his mental health, noting instances of his son talking to himself and acting erratically at night. Investigators discovered online searches related to clinical depression and the 2021 school shooting in Oxford, Michigan. Despite these signs, many who interacted with him regularly, including co-workers at a local nursing home, reported no concerns about his behavior. He had recently earned an associate degree in engineering science and was planning to attend the University of Pittsburgh.
His political leanings were contradictory and remain unclear. He registered as a Republican in 2021 and voted in the 2022 midterms, yet he also made a small donation to a liberal voter turnout group that same year. Online activity linked to him suggested an interest in political violence and antisemitic themes, alongside a fascination with historical assassinations. In the months before the attack, he researched various public figures and political conventions, used encrypted communication to acquire supplies, and practiced at a local shooting range. By the time the FBI concluded its investigation in November 2025, the specific catalyst for his actions had not been identified.
