How a genius can build advanced weaponry from household spare parts
In short: Phineas Mason, known as the Tinkerer, is a master of engineering who turns ordinary appliances into deadly gadgets. From running an underground repair shop to supplying supervillains with high-tech arsenals, his ability to repurpose scrap makes him one of Spider-Man's most resourceful adversaries.
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the Tinkerer first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #2 in 1963. While initially a direct adversary of Spider-Man, the character's role evolved significantly over the decades. By his first mention as a supporting character in July 1978, he had transitioned into a supplier of advanced weaponry for various criminals.
Mason's genius lies in his ability to manufacture complex devices from pre-existing technologies and household leftovers. This skill has made him a valuable asset to many, including the villain Killer Shrike, though Mason often includes failsafes to prevent being cheated by his clients. His operations have even been linked to international interests, such as receiving funding and resources from Latveria under Doctor Doom and Lucia von Bardas.
The character's personal life is marked by tragedy and complexity. His son, Rick Mason, was a mercenary who remained on good terms with his father despite their opposing legal standings. The loss of his family, including his grandson in the Stamford explosion, eventually drove a suicidal and resentful Mason toward a desire to see superheroes and villains destroy one another. This emotional volatility has seen him shift from a small-time operator to a figure capable of aiding alien races like the Vedomi.
The character has been reimagined across various media. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), he is a weapons maker who repurposes Avengers battle technology. In the video game Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020), a female version named Phin Mason leads a group called the Underground using programmable matter technology.
