From a rejected youth prospect to a Premier League mainstay
In short: After Standard Liège declined to sign him permanently, Timothy Castagne had to rebuild his career from the ground up. Today, the Belgian international stands as a testament to resilience, having navigated the tactical rigors of Serie A to become a fixture in the English Premier League.
Castagne’s journey began in the province of Luxembourg, playing for local clubs like US Waltzing and Lorrain Arlon before entering the Virton youth academy. His path to professional football was not a straight line; after training with Standard Liège, the club decided not to recruit him permanently. This setback led him to Genk in 2011, where he signed a three-year professional contract in June 2013. By September 2014, he had secured his place in the first team under coach Alex McLeish.
His ascent continued through Italy's Serie A. In July 2017, Atalanta signed him for €6 million to fill the void left by Andrea Conti. During his three years in Bergamo, Castagne became a versatile threat, notably scoring a crucial UEFA Champions League goal against Shakhtar Donetsk in 2019. Despite his success, his departure from Atalanta was prompted by a difficult relationship with manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
Since moving to England in 2020, Castagne has proven his adaptability. After a successful debut for Leicester City, where he became the fifth Belgian to score on his Premier League debut, he secured an FA Cup in 2021. In August 2023, he joined Fulham on a four-year contract, reportedly for a fee near £15 million. His international career has been equally eventful, marked by a significant injury during UEFA Euro 2020, where a head-to-head collision resulted in a double eye-socket fracture.
