The sports tycoon who danced for victory and fought for a city
In short: Tom Benson was far more than a billionaire sports owner; he became a polarizing figure in New Orleans culture. From building an automobile empire to leading his teams through Hurricane Katrina, he balanced high-profile philanthropy and iconic celebrations with intense public scrutiny and bitter legal battles over his massive personal fortune.
Benson's rise to wealth began in the automobile industry, where he built an empire of dealerships in San Antonio and New Orleans. He leveraged profits from these businesses into local banks, eventually forming Benson Financial before selling it to Norwest Corporation in 1996. This financial foundation allowed him to enter the world of professional sports, most notably by purchasing the New Orleans Saints in 1985 after learning they were at risk of moving to Florida.
His tenure as owner was marked by high-stakes drama and deep community ties. He became a local icon for his "Benson Boogie"—a second-line dance down the field with an umbrella—but faced intense scrutiny during the relocation controversy following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. While he initially suggested moving to San Antonio, he eventually secured the team's return to New Orleans, leading them to a Super Bowl XLIV victory in 2010 and restoring much of his public standing.
Benson was also a prolific philanthropist, receiving the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice from the Pope for his generosity. He donated millions to universities like Tulane and Loyola, and established stadiums and libraries in honor of his late son, Robert Carter Benson. However, his legacy was complicated by a bitter legal battle with his estranged adopted daughter, Renee, who sued him for incompetence over his management of the Saints and Pelicans franchises.
The conflict centered on whether Benson's assets—including a $1 billion trust—were being managed correctly as he aged. Despite claims from his family that his health was declining, a judge found him competent in 2015. He ultimately settled the dispute to ensure peace in his final years, leaving behind a complex portrait of a man who balanced massive commercial success with intense personal and civic friction. Benson passed away in March 2018 at age 90, leaving a footprint that spans from NFL championships and NBA ownership to significant cultural landmarks across Louisiana and Texas.
