From Nigerian academies to the Premier League: the rapid rise of Tolu Arokodare
In short: After honing his skills in the academies of Lagos, Tolu Arokodare has become a standout striker in European football. From a Bundesliga debut to winning the Ebony Shoe in Belgium, his journey through the top leagues of Europe is a testament to relentless ambition and talent.
Born in Festac Town, Lagos, on 23 November 2000, Arokodare’s path to professional football began in the Nigerian academy system. He developed his craft at Kash Academy, Flying Sports Academy, and the Segun Odegbami International College and Sports Academy, before moving to Box2Box FC in Surulere. His talent eventually led to trials with European clubs like SC Freiburg and Toulouse, setting the stage for a nomadic and successful career across several top-tier leagues.
Arokodare's European career saw him move from Latvia's Valmiera in June 2019 to Germany's 1. FC Köln in September 2020, where he made his Bundesliga debut against Arminia Bielefeld. Following a loan at Amiens in France, he moved to the Belgian side Genk in January 2023. His time in Belgium was marked by significant impact; he scored on his debut against Gent and played a key role in Genk's title challenge. In the 2024–25 season, he netted 20 goals, earning him the Ebony Shoe as the best player in Belgium of African extraction.
His recent trajectory has been even more intense. On 1 September 2025, he signed a four-year deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers for £23.4 million. Despite facing challenges, including racial abuse from fans following a missed penalty in February 2026 and a training pitch standoff in July 2026, he has remained a prominent figure. He has also established himself on the international stage, making his Nigeria national team debut in March 2025 and scoring his first goal for the Super Eagles against Russia in June 2025.
