From the pitch to the boardroom: the enduring influence of Txiki Begiristain
In short: He was a vital component of Barcelona’s legendary 'Dream Team' on the field, but his true legacy lies in the shadows of the executive suite. Discover how a prolific winger transformed into one of football's most successful directors of football.
Aitor 'Txiki' Begiristain's playing career was defined by high-stakes success in Spain. After debuting for Real Sociedad in 1982 at just 18 years old, he quickly became a mainstay under coach John Toshack. A defining moment of his early years came in the 1987 Copa del Rey final, where he netted the second goal in a 2–2 draw against Atlético Madrid, eventually helping his side secure the trophy on penalties.
His move to Barcelona in 1987 marked the beginning of a golden era. Alongside teammates like Bakero and Zubizarreta, Begiristain helped build the 'Dream Team' that dominated Spanish football. During his seven seasons in Catalonia, he contributed 81 goals across 313 matches, including a standout 1992–93 campaign where he scored 15 times. His trophy cabinet grew to include four La Liga titles and the 1992 European Cup.
However, Begiristain's impact extended far beyond his playing days. After stints with Deportivo de La Coruña and a period in Japan with Urawa Red Diamonds, he transitioned into football administration. He served seven years as Barcelona's director of football before moving to Manchester City in 2012. In the Premier League, he oversaw a period of unprecedented dominance, including seven national championships and the 2022–23 treble.
After 13 years at Manchester City, Begiristain announced his departure in October 2024, with his tenure officially concluding on 31 July 2025. His career represents a rare bridge between the era of iconic on-field legends and the modern age of strategic sporting recruitment.
