From high school quarterback to NFL wide receiver and Super Bowl champion
In short: Before he was a professional wide receiver, Tutu Atwell was a standout quarterback in Florida. His journey from a record-breaking college career at Louisville to a Super Bowl victory with the Los Angeles Rams showcases a remarkable evolution in athletic versatility and professional resilience.
Chatarius Antwan "Tuta" Atwell Jr., known professionally as Tutu Atwell, began his football journey as a four-year starting quarterback at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. His talent earned him the title of Miami-Dade County Player of the Year during his senior season. However, upon arriving at the University of Louisville, his role underwent a significant transformation as he transitioned from the quarterback position to wide receiver.
At Louisville, Atwell's impact was immediate and historic. During his 2019 sophomore season, he recorded 70 receptions for 1,276 yards and 12 touchdowns, a performance that led the Atlantic Coast Conference and broke the school record previously held by Harry Douglas. Despite his collegiate success, Atwell's path to the NFL was marked by strategic decisions, including opting out of the 2020 season due to an undisclosed injury and forgoing his senior year to enter the 2021 NFL Draft.
Selected 57th overall in the second round by the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, Atwell's professional career has been a blend of explosive plays and injury challenges. While his rookie year saw him primarily utilized as a return specialist, he earned a Super Bowl LVI championship ring when the Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 20–23. Since then, he has experienced significant statistical peaks, such as an 88-yard touchdown catch-and-run against the Indianapolis Colts in 2025, alongside periods on injured reserve. His career has also seen movement between teams, including a stint with the Miami Dolphins before returning to the Rams in 2026.
