How a Liverpool-born defender became a naturalised star for China
In short: Tyias Browning's football career took a dramatic turn when he traded English Premier League prospects for a new identity in the Chinese Super League. By leveraging his maternal heritage, he transformed from an Everton youth prospect into Jiang Guangtai, a key figure for the China national team.
After starting at Everton's youth academy in 1994, the Liverpool native climbed through the ranks to secure the U18 Premier League trophy during 2010–11. While he made several senior appearances for Everton, including a debut against Liverpool in September 2014, his path to consistent top-flight football was interrupted by injuries and loan spells at clubs like Wigan Athletic, Preston North End, and Sunderland.
His career trajectory shifted significantly in 2019 when he moved to the Chinese Super League. His eligibility for the China national team stems from his maternal grandfather, Ying-Wing Chiang, a Cantonese chef who emigrated from Meige Village, Xinhui County, China. Browning became a naturalised Chinese citizen in 2019, adopting the name Jiang Guangtai to align with his new nationality.
The transition was not without complexity. Because of unclear naturalisation rules at Guangzhou Evergrande, his registration was limited to a foreign player for the first half of 2019. This caused administrative confusion, leading manager Fabio Cannavaro to note the club had signed him specifically to utilize him as a domestic player. By 2020, however, the formalities were complete, allowing him to represent China internationally, making his debut in May 2021.
Since his move to China, Browning has found significant success, winning the Chinese Super League title with Guangzhou Evergrande in 2019 and again with Shanghai Port in 2023. He has become a mainstay for the Chinese national team, representing the squad in major competitions like the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
