In short: What began as a project to provide match experience for 96 academy students has transformed into one of China's most valuable football clubs. Through strategic takeovers and record-breaking transfers, Shanghai Port F.C. has risen from the third tier to dominate the Chinese Super League.

The club's origins lie in the Genbao Football Base, established on May 16, 2000, by former international coach Xu Genbao. Initially, the project was not intended to be a professional club; rather, it was a way to provide competition for 96 trainees born between 1988 and 1991. By December 25, 2005, this evolved into Shanghai East Asia, a club that debuted in the third-tier China League Two in 2006 with players as young as 14 years and 287 days old.

The club's trajectory changed significantly following a takeover by the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) in December 2014. This era was marked by unprecedented financial activity in the Chinese transfer market. In 2015, the club spent 50 million Yuan on Yu Hai, setting a record for a Chinese player. Later, the club broke the market record again by signing Elkeson for €18.5 million in 2016, and subsequently invested €56 million to acquire the Brazilian international Hulk.

While the club has achieved massive success, including league titles in 2018, 2023, 2024, and 2025, its history is not without turbulence. Financial difficulties in the early years required government aid in 2007, and more recently, the club faced a five-point deduction in the 2026 CSL season following investigations into match manipulation and corruption within the Chinese Football Association.

Today, the club is a major commercial entity. A 2015 Forbes report valued the club at $159 million, with estimated revenues of $37 million. Now playing at the Pudong Football Stadium, the club remains a central figure in the intense Shanghai derby against rivals Shanghai Shenhua.
