The tight end who defied a knee-shattering draft.
In short: Imagine being a top-tier prospect who can't run a single drill because of a severe injury. Tyler Higbee faced this exact hurdle in 2016, navigating a draft where he was nearly overlooked before becoming a cornerstone of the Los Angeles Rams' offensive history.
Entering the 2016 NFL Draft, Tyler Higbee was a high-profile prospect from Western Kentucky University whose momentum was stalled by a knee sprain suffered during his senior season. The injury was so significant that he had to withdraw from the Senior Bowl and was unable to perform any physical drills at the NFL Scouting Combine. Despite these limitations, scouts recognized his potential, ranking him as one of the top tight end prospects in the country. He eventually became the highest selection in Western Kentucky's history since 2002, selected by the Rams in the fourth round.
Higbee's path to stardom was defined by steady progression and resilience. After a rookie year where he appeared in 16 games, he became a primary target under head coach Sean McVay in 2017. His breakout 2019 season saw him rack up career highs, including 69 receptions and 734 receiving yards. By 2020, he cemented his legacy by becoming the Rams' all-time leader in both receptions and receiving yards for the tight end position, surpassing previous marks held by Lance Kendricks and Billy Truax.
His career has been a testament to durability and high-stakes performance. He reached several franchise milestones, including surpassing 3,000 career receiving yards and becoming the team's leading tight end in touchdown receptions. Even after enduring major injuries—including a torn ACL and MCL in early 2024—Higbee returned to the field to contribute to the Rams' playoff runs, proving that his value extended far beyond his initial draft limitations.
