The remarkable evolution of a football dynasty's record-breaking heir
In short: He didn't just follow in his father's footsteps; he rewrote the record books. From a high school three-sport star in Tulsa to an NFL standout, Tyler Lockett’s journey is a masterclass in versatility, overcoming broken bones and kidney injuries to become a legendary figure in Kansas State history.
Tyler Lockett’s ascent is deeply rooted in a family legacy at Kansas State. The son of Kevin Lockett, a former all-time leading receiver for the Wildcats, Tyler eventually surpassed his father's marks for receiving yards, receptions, and touchdowns. This lineage of excellence extends to his uncle, Aaron, a prominent receiver and return specialist for the school, and his younger brother, Sterling, who joined the Wildcats' 2022 recruitment class.
His collegiate career was defined by extraordinary versatility. During his time with the Wildcats from 2011 to 2014, Lockett was not merely a wide receiver but a lethal threat in all phases of the game. He amassed 6,586 career all-purpose yards, a feat supported by 3,710 receiving yards and significant contributions as a kickoff and punt returner. His 2014 season was particularly dominant, leading the Big 12 in receiving yards and ranking as a national leader in punt return average.
However, this path was rarely smooth. His high school years in Tulsa involved playing through a broken wrist that required surgery, and his freshman season at Kansas State was interrupted by a lacerated kidney. Despite these setbacks, his talent was undeniable. Selected 69th overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2015 NFL draft—a move that required the team to trade multiple future picks to Washington—Lockett transitioned his college dominance to the professional stage, becoming the only rookie in 2015 named 1st team All-Pro.
