In short: Val-d'Or translates to "Valley of Gold," but the geography tells a different story. Despite its name, the city sits on a vast, undulating plain rather than a valley. This linguistic quirk highlights a history built entirely on what was pulled from beneath the earth rather than the land itself.

The town's identity is inextricably linked to the Abitibi gold belt. Gold was first discovered in the area in 1923, leading miners to establish a settlement that eventually became Val-d'Or. While gold remains a primary draw—with the region producing an estimated 45 million ounces since the 1930s—the industrial focus has diversified significantly. Today, base metals like copper, zinc, and lead are increasingly vital resources extracted from volcanic-hosted massive sulphide deposits (VMS). More than 2.7 billion years ago, these minerals settled upon the ocean bed. The city's physical layout reflects this mining heritage. Located atop the Canadian Shield, it sits at a height of 1,100 feet. The local hockey team, the Val-d'Or Foreurs, even keeps this history alive through their mascot, Dynamit, named after the dynamite that was extensively used by the mining industry. To protect this heritage, authorities designated Bourlamaque and the City of Gold as historic landmarks during 1979. Beyond the mines, Val-d'Or serves as a logistical hub for northern Quebec. It is home to the headquarters of Air Creebec and sits at the heart of a major hydrographic network, including Lake Blouin and Baie Carrière. The city also underwent significant municipal reorganization on January 1, 2002, when it merged with Dubuisson, Sullivan, Val-Senneville, and Vassan to form its current boundaries.
